We may be blurring some lines here by claiming Moon Panda for British music. But this debut single from the collective is so strong, we’re planting our flag. Once Californian songwriter Maddy Myers and Danish guitarist Gustav Maltke made the additions of Bristolian synth player George Godwin and London based percussionist Alfie Webber, Brighton became the creative base from which Moon Panda would be launched.
“Rabbit is about unhealthy love. It’s someone so infatuated with their partner that they can’t end their tragic, dependent relationship. I wanted Rabbit to feel quite hypnotic and have some edge. Like a predator lurking around.”Maddy Myers
Taking influence from the sounds of Portishead, Mitski, Beirut, Beach House, and Angel Olsen debut single Rabbit is atmospheric and breathless with a dark undercurrent. Produced by Cam Blackwood (Florence & the Machine, British Sea Power) and released on boutique label My Little Empire, the single was inspired by a character formed in Heiko Julien’s collection of wit-filled 21st century love poems ‘I’m Ready To Die A Violent Death’ Myers explains
With disparate high brow influences such as writer Heiko Julien, maverick composer Charles Ives and the technical guitar intricacies of Erik Mongrain, the music of Moon Panda manages to be beautifully relatable. With mellow soundcapes lush with electronic harmonies that will delight lovers of Air and Zero 7.
