After releasing her third studio album Vessel of Love to critical acclaim, Hollie Cook has reworked Shanks and Bigfoot’s Sweet Like Chocolate. Giving the lovers rock treatment to the UK garage classic, Cook decided to take on the track after hearing her bass guitarist play it backstage. With previous covers of Amy Winehouse, The Shangri-Las, The Carpenters and The Whispers, Hollie spotted an opportunity to step out of her comfort zone.
“I thought that would be a great one to try, and slightly more contemporary than my previous cover attempts!”
Vessel of Love picked up plaudits from the likes of Pitchfork, who described the album as “pristine” and was named BBC 6 Music’s Album of the Day. Cook’s confident return was also a commercial success, taking the top spot on the Billboard Reggae Chart and reaching number three in the UK Independent Album Breakers Chart.
The daughter of Sex Pistols drummer Paul Cook, Hollie cut her musical teeth at just 19 with legendary feminist punk band The Slits, after family friend and Slits vocalist Ari Up invited Hollie to join the band for their 2006 reformation. After four years of touring with the group, Hollie released her debut solo album Hollie Cook in 2011.
With collaborations with Ian Brown, Jaime T and Prince Fatty under her belt, Vessel of Love was produced by legendary producer and Killing Joke guitarist Martin ‘Youth’ Glover. Who, after working with a stellar list of artists including Paul McCartney, Tom Jones, The Verve, Primal Scream, Pink Floyd, and Depeche Mode, describes Cook as “one of the most exciting emerging singers and writers over the last ten years“.
Hollie Cook will be playing at the Music Tastes Good festival in Long Beach, CA on Sunday September 30th. Tickets are available here.
